Identification:
Glorybush is an aggressive noxious weed that is planted for its attractive flower, but has escaped the garden and is a pest throughout Hawaii forming impenetrable thickets and choking out other plants. It currently only known to grow in a few locations in Maui County (see map.) This shrub 3-4 m (10-15 ft) tall with velvety leaves covered in soft hairs. These leaves have the same characteristic 3-5 arching veins as other melastomes such as miconia and Asian and red melastome. Flowers are large (127 mm or 5 in) and deep purple with noticeable PURPLE ANTHERS. FLESHY FRUIT.
