Explore life as a land invertebrate in the Pacific Basin
Invertebrates are animals that have no backbones. There are
three kinds of terrestrial invertebrates on the islands; mollusks (snails and
slugs), arthropods (insects), and arachnids (spiders).
Invertebrates are very important to island ecosystems because they help pollinate plants, serve as food for larger animals, and help maintain normal population levels of organisms that they feed on. Introduced invertebrates can be a major problem for island ecosystems because they can disrupt all of those established patterns by eating the food of native invertebrates, preying on native invertebrates and bringing in new diseases that can kill native animals of all kinds.
