Biodiversity conservation in any locale depends upon what science can learn about the environment; must support economic development and stability; be valued by the community; and integrate local cultural knowledge and practices. Community-based approaches to informing and empowering citizens to impact conservation efforts are vital. PBIN has expanded its role as a passive purveyor of information to become an active participant in building scientific and technical capacity in local communities.
Through partnerships such as that with the Maui Community College, Malama Pikoi - Maui and others, PBIN is engaging undergraduate and K-12 students, and local citizens. Not only offering a wide array of important data for decision-making but also engaging citizens in better understanding their islands and its important biodiversity.
