Introduction to Avian Conservation Avian Conservation events in Hawaii and around the Pacific Basin
Avian conservation is one of the hottest biology topics in the Pacific Basin today. Birds are the dominant group of terrestrial vertebrates on oceanic islands. Strong fliers, birds cross distances of open water more easily than other land-based animals, and in doing so they leave behind many of the predators and diseases that limit their numbers on continents. Ecological opportunities abound for birds on islands, and here they have evolved into new species. However, in adapting to this novel environment, island birds sometimes lose the very defenses that protect them on continents.More?
